BIOGRAPHY:
St. Paschal Baylon was born on May 16, 1540, in Torrehermosa, Spain, to a poor but devout farming family. From an early age, he worked as a shepherd and stood out for his deep piety and love for the Eucharist. At the age of 24, he joined the Franciscan Order as a lay brother, living a life of poverty, humility, and prayer. His special devotion to the Eucharist led him to spend hours in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament. During a journey to France, he bravely defended the belief in Christ's real presence in the Eucharist against Calvinist preachers and barely escaped death at the hands of an angry crowd. St. Paschal died on May 17, 1592, at the monastery of Villarreal near Valencia. He was beatified in 1618 and canonized in 1690. Pope Leo XIII declared him the patron of Eucharistic congresses and associations in 1897.
