BIOGRAPHY:
St. Vitalis was an early Christian martyr who, according to tradition, lived in the 2nd century. He was a wealthy Roman and is said to have been the husband of St. Valeria and the father of Saints Gervasius and Protasius. According to tradition, St. Vitalis was persecuted for his Christian faith and cruelly executed. It is reported that he lived and was buried in Ravenna. His veneration spread rapidly, and the famous Church of San Vitale was built in his honor in Ravenna, remaining one of the most important works of early Christian art.
