BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Clement Mary Hofbauer was born on December 26, 1751, in Tasswitz, Moravia (now the Czech Republic), as Johannes Hofbauer. After the early death of his father, he grew up in modest circumstances and initially trained as a baker. His desire to become a priest led him to Rome, where in 1784 he encountered the Redemptorist order and joined them. After his ordination in 1785, he was sent to Warsaw, where he led the Church of St. Benno and established a "perpetual mission," with daily Masses and sermons. Following the suppression of the order by Napoleon in 1808, he moved to Vienna, where he worked as a confessor and spiritual guide until his death on March 15, 1820. He was beatified in 1888 and canonized in 1909. Since 1914, he has been one of the patron saints of Vienna.
