BIOGRAPHY:
St. Augustine of Canterbury was a Benedictine monk and the first Archbishop of Canterbury. Pope Gregory the Great sent him on a mission to England in 597 to convert the Anglo-Saxons to Christianity. Augustine successfully baptized King Æthelberht of Kent, marking a major milestone in England's Christianization. He founded the Church of Canterbury and laid the foundation for the future Anglican Church. Augustine was highly regarded for his missionary work and diplomatic skills. He likely died in 604 or 605 in Canterbury.
