BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Augustine was born in 354 in Tagaste (modern-day Algeria). After a reckless youth, he converted to Christianity through the prayers of his mother, St. Monica, and the sermons of St. Ambrose. In 387, he was baptized and returned to North Africa, where he became a priest and later the Bishop of Hippo. Augustine was a significant theologian and philosopher; his works, such as "De civitate Dei" and "Confessions," continue to influence Christian thought today. He defended Christianity against various heresies of his time and played a major role in shaping medieval theology. He died on August 28, 430, during the siege of Hippo by the Vandals.
