BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Benedict of Nursia is considered the father of Western monasticism and the founder of the Benedictine order. Born around 480 in Nursia, Italy, he retreated as a young man to a cave near Subiaco to live an ascetic life. Later, he founded several monasteries, including the famous Montecassino Abbey, which became a center of spiritual and cultural learning. His "Rule of Saint Benedict," known for its moderation and wisdom, shaped monastic life in Europe for centuries. Saint Benedict died around 547 at Montecassino, where he was buried next to his sister, Saint Scholastica.
