BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Gereon was a Roman officer of the Theban Legion, which served under Emperor Maximian in the 3rd century AD. He and his soldiers, being Christians, refused to sacrifice to the pagan gods and were executed in Cologne. Tradition states that St. Gereon and his companions suffered martyrdom for their steadfast faith. Over his presumed tomb, the Basilica of St. Gereon was later built, which remains one of Cologne's most important Romanesque churches.
