BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Norbert of Xanten was born around 1080 in Gennep, near Xanten, in the Lower Rhine region. As the son of a noble family, he was initially destined for an ecclesiastical career and became a canon at the collegiate church of St. Victor in Xanten. His life changed dramatically after a lightning strike near him, leading to a profound inner conversion. He renounced his previous offices and possessions, was ordained a priest, and dedicated himself as a traveling preacher to spreading the Gospel in Germany, France, and Belgium.
In 1120, he founded the Premonstratensian Order in Prémontré, France, laying the foundation for a new community of regular canons. His order spread quickly throughout Europe. In 1126, he was appointed Archbishop of Magdeburg, where he implemented reforms, disciplined the clergy, and promoted church renewal. He was a staunch defender of the Eucharist and fought against heresies. St. Norbert passed away on June 6, 1134, in Magdeburg.

St. Norbert is the patron saint of the Diocese of Magdeburg, the Magdeburg region, the Premonstratensians, and one of the patrons of Bohemia.
