BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Lucius I was born in Rome; little is known about his family, except that his father was named Porphyrianus. He was elected Bishop of Rome on June 25, 253, during a time marked by persecutions against Christians. Shortly after his consecration, he was exiled but soon managed to return to Rome. During his pontificate, he firmly opposed the doctrines of the Novatians, who refused to readmit fallen Christians into the Church. Lucius emphasized the importance of mercy and forgiveness for repentant sinners. He died on March 5, 254, and was buried in the Catacombs of Callixtus in Rome. Later, his relics were transferred to the Church of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere. His head is preserved in a reliquary in the Cathedral of Copenhagen, Denmark.
