BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Maximin of Trier was born in the late 3rd century in Silly, near Poitiers (France). He was appointed Bishop of Trier in 329 and became a strong opponent of Arianism. From 335 to 337, he gave refuge to Saint Athanasius of Alexandria, who had been exiled by the emperor. During his episcopate, he strengthened Christianity in the region, supported the construction of churches, and defended Orthodox teachings. According to legend, he traveled with a tamed bear that helped him carry loads. Saint Maximin died on September 12, 346, in Poitiers while on a journey. His relics were transferred to Trier on May 29, 353, where the Abbey of Saint Maximin was later founded in his honor.
PATRONAGE:
St. Maximin is the patron saint against perjury, dangers at sea, and harmful rain. He is especially venerated in Alsace and the Trier region.
