BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Werner of Oberwesel was born around 1270 and came from a humble background. He was a young Christian from Womrath who was murdered in 1287 under unclear circumstances in Oberwesel. Shortly after his death, rumors spread that he had been the victim of a ritual murder, leading to violent pogroms against Jewish communities along the Rhine. Although the Church never officially canonized him, he was venerated as a saint in the region. His grave in Bacharach became a pilgrimage site, and a chapel was built in his honor in the 17th century. Over time, the veneration of St. Werner faded, especially as the Church distanced itself from the ritual murder accusations in the 20th century.
