Saint Melanie was born into a noble Roman family. At the age of 13, she married her cousin, who shared her ascetic lifestyle after the death of her children. They sold their possessions and donated the proceeds to the poor and churches. It was impressive that Melanie, one of the richest women in the Roman Empire, only had 50 pieces of gold when she died, which she left to the local bishop for social purposes.
