BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Pius I was Pope from about 140 to 155 AD and played a crucial role in the early Church. Likely born in Aquileia, he led the Church during a period of intense theological disputes, particularly against the Gnostics. Under his leadership, the organization of the Roman Church was strengthened, and he is believed to have commissioned the construction of an early Christian church in Rome. He lived under Emperor Antoninus Pius, who was relatively tolerant towards Christians, though local persecutions continued. Tradition holds that St. Pius I died a martyr, though the exact circumstances remain uncertain.
