BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Virgil of Salzburg was born around the year 700 in Ireland and was a significant theologian, astronomer, and missionary. He joined a monastery at an early age and later became an abbot. In 743, he traveled to Bavaria, where he worked as a missionary. In 755, he was consecrated Bishop of Salzburg and dedicated himself to the promotion of sciences. He founded schools and built numerous churches. He became famous for teaching that the Earth was a sphere, an unusual belief at the time. He died on November 27, 784, and was later canonized.
