BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Ursula, born in Brittany (France), was a British king's daughter and betrothed to a pagan prince. On her return journey from a pilgrimage to Rome, she and her companions fell into the hands of the Huns in Cologne. As she refused the Hun king's marriage proposal, they were all executed. This was later interpreted as a martyr's death.
PATRONAGE:
St. Ursula is the patron saint of the city of Cologne; of virgins, educators, teachers, universities, schools, Catholic youth and pilgrims.
SYMBOLISM, DEPICTION:
The symbols of San Ursula are a palm branch as a universally recognized sign of martyrdom, lilies to emphasize her innocence and an arrow to represent her martyrdom.
