BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Willibrord of Echternach came from an Anglo-Saxon family in Northumbria and received his formative religious education in Ireland. As a determined missionary, he traveled to the European mainland, where he spread the Christian faith as the "Apostle of the Frisians" and founded the important monastery of Echternach in present-day Luxembourg. His tireless commitment to evangelization and the establishment of stable church structures, coupled with his deep piety, solidified his reputation as one of the most significant messengers of faith of the early Middle Ages. Eventually, St. Willibrord passed away peacefully on November 7, 739, in his monastery in Echternach, which continues to preserve his spiritual legacy to this day.
PATRONAGE:
St. Willibrord is the patron saint of Luxembourg, the Diocese of Luxembourg, the Frisians, and winegrowers, and is invoked for intercession regarding eye ailments or epilepsy.
