BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Agatha of Catania, born in Catania (Sicily), took a vow of perpetual virginity at a young age. For this reason, she also refused to obey the Roman governor Quintianus. He tried to force her into a marriage and then tortured her in response to her refusal. The cutting off of her breasts was particularly cruel, making her the patron saint of breast cancer patients. Legend has it that one year after her death, her veil stopped the lava flow of Mount Etna and saved the city from great disaster. Agatha died in Catania prison at the age of around 20.
