BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Barbara, born in what is now Izmit (Turkey), is considered one of the fourteen emergency helpers. Her father Dioscuros, a wealthy and influential pagan, was concerned about the growing influence of Christianity and kept his daughter imprisoned in a tower to keep her away from religion. However, Barbara adopted the faith despite her isolation, which angered her father. He tortured her with cruel methods until he sealed her fate and beheaded her. Immediately after this act, he was struck by lightning, which is interpreted as divine retribution.
