BIOGRAPHY:
St. Bruno, born around 1030 in Cologne, was a learned cleric and theologian. He studied in Reims, where he later became chancellor. Disappointed by the worldliness of the Church, he withdrew with some companions to the solitude of the Chartreuse Mountains in 1084, founding the first Carthusian monastery, which led to the establishment of the Carthusian Order. Despite his contemplative nature, Pope Urban II, one of his former students, summoned him to Rome. However, after a short time, he left the papal court and retired to Calabria, where he founded another hermitage and died in 1101.
