BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Christina, born in the city of Tyre (modern-day Lebanon), is considered an early Christian martyr. As the daughter of a high-ranking Roman officer and follower of Roman polytheism, her Christian faith met with great resistance. Her father locked her in a tower and forced her to sacrifice to the Roman gods. However, Christine resisted, whereupon her father ordered her to be tortured. According to legend, Christine was repeatedly healed by divine intervention despite being severely mistreated. According to another legend, she was tied to a millstone and thrown into a lake. Angels rescued her and brought her to the shore unharmed. In the end, however, she suffered martyrdom by arrows and death by sword.
PATRONAGE:
St. Christina is the patron saint of the town of Bolsena; of millers and millers' people, protects against childhood illnesses and millstone accidents.
