When did Saint Dimiti live: 17th century AD

BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Dimiti the Younger, also known as Dimiti of Basarbovo, originated from the village of Basarbovo near Russe in present-day Bulgaria and initially lived as a simple shepherd. Following a transformative experience-tradition speaks of deep remorse over the accidental death of a fledgling or the passing of his wife-he decided on a radical change of lifestyle and entered a cave monastery near his home as a monk. There, he dedicated himself to the ascetic ideal until the end of his life, characterized by strict fasting, solitary prayer, and profound humility before creation. His reputation for holiness spread far beyond his death, especially after his incorrupt remains were discovered. In 1774, his relics were transferred to Bucharest, where they are still venerated today in the patriarchal cathedral, and he is regarded as one of the most significant saints of the region.

PATRONAGE:
St. Dimiti is the patron saint of Bucharest.

SYMBOLISM, DEPICTION:
The symbols of Saint Dimiti in this depiction are the staff with the patriarchal double cross and the small bell, which illustrates his spiritual authority and the call to prayer, as well as the water bottle (gourd) at his belt as a sign of his modest, ascetic lifestyle as a hermit. The rosary in his hand represents unceasing prayer and spiritual devotion, while the spade at his feet points to his manual labor and his down-to-earth nature as a former shepherd and hermit.
