BIOGRAPHY:
St. Ivo of Chartres came from a noble family near Beauvais, France. He received an excellent education, including under Lanfranc of Bec, and initially became Provost of Saint-Quentin before being elevated to Bishop of Chartres in 1090. As one of the most important canon lawyers of the Middle Ages, he gained fame through his mediating role in the Investiture Controversy and his pioneering collections of canon law, such as the "Decretum" and "Panormia." His status as a saint is based on his unwavering loyalty to the Church, his deep theological scholarship, and his commitment to justice and care for the poor. He died of natural causes in 1115, leaving a legacy that shaped the structure of the Church for centuries.
