BIOGRAPHY:
St. Luke, traditionally recognized as the author of the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament, was likely from Antioch and by profession a physician. He was a companion of the Apostle Paul and is mentioned in the Epistle to the Colossians as the "beloved physician." His writings are characterized by a special attention to the poor and marginalized, as well as detailed descriptions of the birth and childhood of Jesus. There is little certain information about his later life and death; some traditions report that he suffered martyrdom.
