BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Martin of Tours was born in 316/317 in Savaria (modern-day Szombathely, Hungary) as the son of a Roman officer. He joined the Roman army as a young man. One day, while patrolling near Amiens, he encountered a beggar shivering in the cold. He cut his cloak in half with his sword and gave one part to the beggar. That night, Christ appeared to him in a dream wearing the divided cloak. This vision led St. Martin to be baptized and leave the military life. He founded the Marmoutier Monastery and later became the Bishop of Tours. Known for his missionary work in Gaul and his care for the poor, he passed away in 397 and was buried in Tours.
PATRONAGE:
St. Martin is the patron saint of soldiers, horse riders, beggars, tailors, winemakers, and the city of Mainz. He is also invoked for the protection of work animals and a good harvest.

The most famous symbol of San Martin is the divided cloak, representing charity and mercy. He is often depicted on horseback, using his sword to cut his cloak and share it with a beggar. The horse symbolizes his former status as a Roman officer.
