BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Odilo of Cluny was born around 962 in the Auvergne region of France. He joined the Benedictine monastery of Cluny around 990 and became its fifth abbot in 994. Under his leadership, the Cluniac reform movement flourished, and the number of monasteries affiliated with Cluny increased significantly. Saint Odilo promoted the "Peace of God," a movement aimed at reserving certain times of the year for non-violence. Around 1030, he introduced the commemoration of the faithful departed on November 2, to pray for the souls in Purgatory. He also wrote the lives of his predecessor Majolus and Empress Adelaide. He died on January 1, 1049, at the priory of Souvigny.
