BIOGRAPHY:
St. Agatho was born around the year 577 in Palermo, Sicily, and entered a monastery at an early age, dedicating himself to theology and the service of the Church. He was elected Pope in 678 and became known for his diplomatic skills and efforts to maintain the unity of the Church. He strongly opposed Monothelitism, a Christological doctrine claiming that Christ had only one will. His stance was affirmed at the Third Council of Constantinople (680-681). St. Agatho was described as a wise, gentle, and compassionate pope. He passed away in 681 in Rome.
