When did Saint Irene live: 3rd century AD
BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Irene came from Aquileia (Italy) and discovered the Christian faith together with her sisters Agape and Chionia. Despite the persecution of Christians under Emperor Diocletian, they remained steadfast and were condemned for their faith. Their house was searched and banned Christian writings were found, which led to their arrest. The sisters were sentenced to death by burning, while Irene was first taken to a brothel. However, no one dared to dishonor her, which is why Irene also died at the stake. The accounts come from the Greek trial records, which are still considered important documents in the history of the persecution of Christians.
