BIOGRAPHY:
St. John of God was born in 1495 in Montemor-o-Novo, Portugal. As a young man, he led an adventurous life as a soldier and merchant before experiencing a deep religious conversion at the age of 40. After this, he dedicated himself entirely to the poor and the sick. He founded a hospital in Granada where he cared for all in need, regardless of their background or financial situation. His work laid the foundation for the Hospitaller Order of St. John of God, which continues to serve in the healthcare field worldwide. He died in 1550 and was canonized in 1690.
