BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Justine came from a noble family. Her parents converted to Christianity after a sermon by St. Prosdocimus, the first bishop of Padua, and regarded Justine as an answer to their prayers. Justine also became deeply religious and took a vow of perpetual virginity. Under Emperor Nero, she visited prisons to encourage the imprisoned Christians, which ultimately led to her arrest. The prefect Maximian recognized her beauty and tried to dissuade her from her faith, but she remained steadfast and was therefore executed with a sword.
PATRONAGE:
St. Justine is the patron saint of Padua, Palmanova and the second patron saint of Venice after St. Mark.
SYMBOLISM:
The symbols of San Justine are a book as a sign of wisdom, a diadem which emphasizes her noble origins, a palm branch which is generally regarded as a symbol of martyrdom, lilies which represent her innocence and purity and a sword as an allusion to her death sentence and execution.
