Memorial Day: August 13

When did Saint Kassian live: around AD 304

BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Kassian of Imola was a Christian teacher and martyr in the early 4th century. Because he refused to offer sacrifices to the Roman gods, he was arrested and sentenced to death. His martyrdom was particularly cruel: his own students were forced to kill him using their styli, the sharp writing tools of the time.
Kassian is also venerated as the first bishop of Sabiona (now Brixen in South Tyrol), where his relics were transferred, and he became the patron saint of the city and diocese.

PATRONAGE:
St. Kassian is the patron saint of teachers, stenographers, writers, and the city of Brixen.

SYMBOLISM, DEPICTION:
The symbol of San Kassian is the stylus, which represents his martyrdom at the hands of his pupils. A book is also regarded as a sign of his teaching activity and an abbot's staff as a symbol of his role as a church leader.
