BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Oswald was born around 604 as the son of King Æthelfrith of Bernicia and his wife Acha of Deira in Northumbria. After his father's death, he fled to Scotland, where he converted to Christianity at the monastery of Iona. In 634, he returned and defeated the British King Cadwallon at the Battle of Heavenfield, becoming King of Northumbria. He promoted the spread of Christianity in his kingdom by inviting the monk Aidan from Iona and founding the monastery of Lindisfarne. Oswald was known for his charity and faith. He died on August 5, 642, at the Battle of Maserfield against the pagan King Penda of Mercia and is venerated as a martyr.
