BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Thecla, born in Konya (Turkey), is portrayed in the Acts of St. Paul as a faithful follower of the apostle Paul. Tradition tells of her conversion by St. Paul and her subsequent annulment of her betrothal, which was aimed at a life as a follower of Christ. She was therefore sentenced to death in court, but miraculously escaped execution several times. One incident in particular stands out. In the arena, she was spared by a lioness because she devoted herself to protecting the other animals.
PATRONAGE:
St. Thecla is the patron saint of the city of Tarragona; of virgins, the persecuted, the sick and the suffering.
SYMBOLISM, DEPICTION:
The symbol of San Thecla is the funeral pyre, which represents the first attempted execution.
