BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Hedwig enjoyed a monastic education from a very early age and was married at the age of twelve. That marriage produced seven children. She was known for her generosity towards the poor and needy. Despite her high status, she lived ascetically, dressed simply and even went barefoot in winter. This gave her the name "mother of the poor". The role she played for the region of Silesia is remarkable. She encouraged the settlement of German farmers and craftsmen, which led to a period of economic and cultural prosperity. She also founded numerous hospitals. After the death of her husband, she retired to the Trebnitz monastery she had founded, where she lived until her death without taking formal vows.
PATRONAGE:
St. Hedwig is the patron saint of Silesia, Berlin, Brandenburg and Krakow. She is also invoked in cases of jealousy.
