BIOGRAPHY:
St. Othmar was born around 689 and was of Alemannic origin. After studying in Chur, he became a priest and took charge of a church in Rhaetia. In 720, Tribune Waltram appointed him head of the cell of St. Gall, which he developed into a major monastery. As the first abbot of St. Gall, he introduced the Benedictine rule, laying the foundation for the abbey's future prosperity. He was known for his care for the poor and the sick, founding a hospital and the first leprosarium in the region. Due to conflicts with Frankish counts, he was imprisoned in 759 and exiled to the island of Werd, where he died on November 16.
