BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Paola, born in Rome, initially led a luxurious life as the wife of the Roman senator Toxotius. After his death, however, her circumstances changed drastically. She turned to asceticism and the monastic life and became a confidante of the church father Jerome. Paula supported him in translating the Bible into Latin (Vulgate) and in return received an in-depth study of the Holy Scriptures. Together they founded two monasteries in Bethlehem.

PATRONAGE:
St. Paola is the patron saint of widows and ascetics.
