When did Saint William live: 8th - 9th century AD (755 - 812)

BIOGRAPHY:
Saint William of Gellone, also known as William of Aquitaine, was descended from high Frankish nobility and was a grandson of Charles Martel as well as a close confidant of Charlemagne. He initially achieved fame as a brave knight and Count of Toulouse, particularly through his military successes against the Moors. Despite his brilliant worldly career, William sought deeper spiritual fulfillment and founded the Abbey of Gellone (now Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert) in 804. His path to holiness is based on his radical obedience and the humility with which he laid down his sword to enter the community he founded as a simple Benedictine monk. He died peacefully in 812 in his monastery, where he is still revered today as a model for the renunciation of worldly power.

PATRONAGE:
St. William is the patron saint of armorers, knights, and porters.

SYMBOLISM, DEPICTION:
The symbols of St. William are the Benedictine habit as a sign of his monastic life and the cloak, which underscores his protective role and former noble status. He is often depicted with a model of a monastery, identifying him as the founder of Gellone, while an accompanying sword recalls his knightly origins and subsequent renunciation of violence.
