BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Edith of Wilton, daughter of King Edgar the Peaceable of England, grew up in the Benedictine tradition. Her mother was abducted from Wilton Abbey by Edgar, but returned to the convent with her daughter two years later. At the age of 15, Edith was faced with the choice of staying in the convent and taking a vow or accepting her father's offer to place her in a high social position. He even brought gifts of silver and gold, but she rejected these worldly offers and devoted herself to her faith. An interesting episode in her life was her encounter with the Archbishop of Canterbury, who rebuked her for her sumptuous clothing. These clothes later survived a fire, which was considered a miracle. In addition, she was offered the crown after the death of her half-brother, but she was not inclined to this offer either, again showing a great devotion.
