BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Gertrude of Nivelles came from a prominent family that was closely linked to the ruling dynasty of the Carolingians. She demonstrated exceptional religious devotion from an early age. At the age of ten, she steadfastly refused to marry and opted for a life in a convent. After the death of her father, her mother founded the convent in Nivelles. Gertrud entered at the age of 14 and later took over the management. She promoted the education of the members and took care of an extensive library of sacred writings. According to legend, she drove away a plague of rats and mice with a prayer. This saved the entire harvest.
