BIOGRAPHY:
St. John of Cologne was a Dominican priest from Cologne who served in the Netherlands. During the Protestant Reformation, he bravely defended the Catholic faith and joined a group of 18 other priests and religious figures known as the Martyrs of Gorcum. In 1572, they were captured by Calvinists and tortured for refusing to renounce their faith, especially the doctrine of the Eucharist and papal authority. They were eventually hanged in Brielle. St. John of Cologne was beatified in 1675 and canonized in 1867.
