BIOGRAPHY:
Saint Berthild of Chelles, born near Soissons (France), came from an important Frankish family. She entered the monastery of Jouarre at a young age, where she was educated by the first abbess Thelchildis. Her appointment as the first abbess of Chelles Abbey was decisive. This was founded by Queen Bathilde and experienced its heyday under Berthild, which is why it also attracted numerous noble women. She was known for her self-mortification and unwavering devotion to her faith. This is also referred to as inner martyrdom.
PATRONAGE:
St. Berthild of Chelles is the patron saint of horses; protects against thunderstorms, hernia and throat ailments, goitre, hives and horse diseases.
